Don’t Wait For Happiness - It’s Waiting For You!
- I loose 5 pounds
- I start my workout routine
- The baby sleeps through the night
- When I get that next promotion
- When the mortgage is paid off
- When the kids leave the home (and I can finally focus on me!)
- Summer is finally here....
Why is it that we are always waiting to be happy?
Happiness is a choice, don't wait for things to be perfect, choose happiness now. Focus on what you do have rather than what is missing in your life. Instead of thinking ‘I’ll be happy when I have paid off the mortgage’, think isn’t it great that I have a roof over my head and protection from the outside elements. Focus on how far you have come, rather than thinking how much further you have to go. Know that you will never have this moment in time again, so enjoy it while it lasts.
"Life is what happens to us while we are making other plans". Often mistakenly attributed to John Lennon however this quote was first published by Allen Saunders in 1957 in the Readers Digest! Now theres an interesting trivia fact for you! But Saunders had it right (and Lennon too I suppose), while you are planning for the next goal, mapping your way to the next milestone, everyday life is passing you by. You are missing so much by not being present to this moment.
Now I'm not saying you should give up on all your goals and dreams just so you can live in the now! It's important to be striving to keep moving forward in life. When I was younger I remember living my life through my goals, always trying to reach the next milestone, knowing I would be happy when I reached that next goal. But eventually I would reach it, and nothing would change. I would be happy to have finally 'made it' but as soon as I had, I would be thinking about the next goal or what else I needed in my life to be truly happy. And I remember thinking when I get to the next stage I will surely be happier than I am right now.
But it's a vicious cycle, there will always be another mountain to climb, another goal to achieve something else you feel is missing that will make you happy. But it’s just not true. You already have everything you need right now to be happy, it’s inside you. According to Mindfulness Expert Elisha Goldstein all you have to do is STOP!
S = Stop what you are doing
T = Take a few deep, slow breaths
O = Observe your present experience including thoughts, feelings and emotions
P = Proceed with something that will support you in the moment; call a friend, have a cup of tea or go for a nice walk in nature. It’s up to you!
In choosing to be happy now in this present moment, we are saying it's okay to have a goal but it’s just as important to enjoy the journey! And life is a journey!
Don't wait to hug your kids, wear that nice dress, drink that expensive bottle of red you have been saving, go get out and enjoy nature. Do it now. Make the most of every moment. Live life now.
